building an award-winning home remotely

Trust in the Process

When a globe-trotting Kiwi couple were looking to craft a relaxing sanctuary for their home away from home, they needed someone they could trust. Thankfully Landmark Homes' expert team were the right people for the job, helping the overseas-based couple Design and Build their pavilion-style family home complete with tranquil views of Taupō's Mt Tauraha.

We spoke to Landmark Homes Taupō franchise co-owner and builder Steven Painter about the inspiration and unique process for designing and building this award-winning Landmark Home.

Trust in the process

The couple wanted a base where they could rest and unwind, but with a busy overseas work schedule, the build was done remotely, with the client putting a lot of trust in the Landmark team to ensure the design brief was met to perfection.

"Landmark did the full design brief and met twice with the client before construction. Almost everything was done over Zoom and Skype meetings," says Steven.

The couple had a clear vision for their elevated, 292m2 four bedroom modern Pavilion-styled build, which included two distinctive wings. The left-wing comprises an open-plan living, kitchen and dining that flows onto a large, LouvreTec covered deck.

And while this outdoor area makes the most of stunning views of the majestic Mt Tauraha, a second outdoor space embraces the afternoon sun, offering protection from an easterly or northerly wind blowing in from the mountain.

Immersive views

The right-wing was designed to capture the best of the morning sun and offers immersive views of the town and mountain. There are three bedrooms and a private master with a luxurious ensuite.

A raised bath, placed beneath a picture window, was realised thanks to the innovation and thinking of Landmarks designers and builders.

"We decided to raise the bath to make the most of the view," Steven says. "Capturing that northern view was key. We moved the odd window around to ensure we were making the most of what the landscape had to offer."

This stunning feature perfectly frames the breath taking vista beyond and offers an incredible spot to relax and unwind in the peace and tranquillity of the home.

Striking innovation

The exterior is clad in vertical cedar with striking black Hiland Tray roofing in parts and blends seamlessly into its impressive surroundings. The exterior ties in with the internal design with accents of cedar featuring throughout.

An innovative statement two-sided Rinnai linear 1000 fireplace draws the eye to its cedar-clad central pillar, separating the formal lounge from the kitchen, dining area and family room, creating a warm and inviting ambience. With polished exposed concrete floors, the home offers cosy yet contemporary luxury.

The designer kitchen, complete with a must-have wine fridge, complements the rest of the home with its black finishings and cedar accents, tying in perfectly with the two-sided fireplace and other surroundings.

Despite being overseas, the couple worked closely with Landmarks' colour consultants and were heavily involved with the design of their home.

"The couple chose all the interior furnishings and collaborated on the colour schedule with our colour consultant. They knew the look they wanted right down to the lights and the seat around the kitchen. Again, this was all done via phone and video calls. " Steven says.

Award-winning slice of paradise

With clean lines, a stunning outlook, and a modern yet classical feel, it is no wonder this Landmark Home was awarded Silver in the House of the Year category for the Bay of Plenty / Central Plateau region.

This stunning Design and Build home not only met the owner's brief and level of investment but also highlights Landmark Homes' exceptional attention to detail and unparalleled experience in building innovative homes that will stand the test of time.
