Many Kiwis dream of a home with sea views. For Carol and Barry Upson, sea views are just one of the many stunning features of their award-winning Landmark Home.
“We wake up in the morning and we just think, ‘wow,’” says Carol. “It’s everything we dreamed of, everything we wanted – and that much more.”
Their stunning home – built by Landmark Homes Taranaki – was awarded Regional Category Winner and Gold Reserve in the 2019 Registered Master Builders House of the Year New Home $600,000 – $750,000 category.
But it’s not just the accolade that the Taranaki team won’t forget in a hurry. Perched atop a steep hill, the project proved something of a challenge for a Remove and Rebuild.
Delivering on a tricky site
Landmark Homes Taranaki owner Scott Vile agrees it was ‘the trickiest site’ he’s ever worked on – but one he relished.
“They were great people with great ideas. They had a vision and we just made it happen,” he says.
Choosing Landmark Homes to build that vision was no snap decision. Carol and Barry have both built homes before, and they had a good idea of what was involved in the building process. They did their research beforehand and checked out a number of showhomes by other building companies in the area, but Carol says there was a clear winner.
“Without a doubt, Landmark’s quality far surpassed any other home,” says Carol. “The quality of the finishing, the products they used – it was all to an extremely high standard.”
The Upsons also knew exactly what they wanted in their home, so they put together a scrapbook of ideas and went off to talk to the Landmark Homes team. A few coffees later, those rough plans had been drawn up into something magical – and the journey began.
As a Remove and Rebuild, the project involved demolishing the 1900s cottage already on the property and then building the new home in its place. With only a steep curved driveway leading to the site, this required some hairy manoeuvring with a crane.
But, as Carol said, ‘nothing was a problem’.
“Our friends used to say, ‘oh, you’re going to have problems. But there were no problems. All the contractors they used had a lovely quality about them. They were just so professional – from the plumber to the electrician.”
The result is a winner on all counts. With its high-tech features and incredible views of the city and sea, this three-bedroom home boasts luxury and style.
Inspired by the traditional black and white style of the previous dwelling, Carol says the aim was to keep the exterior very soft. They chose a modern, cube style with aluminum louvres.
The second floor boasts Landmark’s distinctive 2.7m-high ceilings, windows and doors. Glazed sliders have been used to create indoor-outdoor flow. A stunning alfresco room promises summer barbeques or stargazing.
The luxurious living area upstairs is a ‘social hub’, combining kitchen and dining. The huge butler’s kitchen features a scullery and a wine bar, while the media room and a golf course simulator make the home perfect for both entertaining and relaxing.
Down the spectacular staircase are two guest bedrooms and a bathroom. Neutral shades create textures and a calm vibe throughout the rooms.
The master bedroom is the real gem. Along with a large ensuite and walk-in wardrobe, there’s something very special about being able to sit up in bed and see through the living area to the sea.
To say Carol and Barry love their new home would be an understatement.
“It was far beyond our wildest dreams. You hear these horror stories about building, but that was never the case,” says Carol.
They already have plans to build two more homes with Landmark Homes. After all, they’ve become quite close to the Taranaki team.
“We’ve got a lovely relationship with them. Scotty would be a friend of ours now, and Kelly was just fantastic in bringing things together. If she said she was going to do something, it was done.”
