Timeless Style Never Goes Out of Fashion – Brookside Ready to Build plan

Maximum style and space

Timeless style never goes out of fashion
When Colin and Jude Morrison found the home of their dreams, they never imagined it would be some 300 kilometres away from where they would build.

While visiting Auckland, the Taranaki couple were captivated by a Landmark Homes showhome in Karaka. Built using the Akaroa Ready to Build plan, the showhome captured all the features they desired for a place of their own: a timeless design which would look as iconic now as it will in years to come.

Three years later, it was time to build the home of their dreams – and inspired by what they had seen and experienced in the Auckland showhome, Colin and Jude knew they wanted to work with Landmark Homes.

Made to suit

The couple had purchased a piece of land overlooking the New Plymouth Golf Club (Ngamotu), a lush location with views of the expansive golf course adjacent.

Inspired by what could be achieved by a Ready to Build plan after seeing the Akaroa, the couple set out to find a plan that not only gave them the style they liked, but also suited their space and maximised the location’s features.

“We were looking for a plan that caught sun from sunrise to sunset and showcased the views of the golf course, as it is a beautiful spot that looks more like a park,” says Colin.

“When we saw the Brookside design we thought, ‘Wow, this will work perfectly.’”

Time after time

As fate would have it, the Brookside was created by Landmark Homes as a single-level version of the Akaroa plan that Colin and Jude loved so much.

The three-bedroom Brookside design is open living at its finest, with a large kitchen and dining area, which includes a comfy corner seat in the kitchen for warm, relaxed breakfast dining. Plus, the timeless style of its linea weatherboard exterior and outdoor entertaining areas really appealed to Colin and Jude.

“Our landscape planner said, ‘This house looks like it has been here for years’. That’s what attracted us to it – it’s stunning now and will still be stunning in years to come.”

Utilising a dramatic black and white effect both inside and out achieves just the look the couple were after, giving the home a clean yet comforting feel. The kitchen simply glows with beautiful black granite bench tops glistening against white satin-panelled cabinetry.

Accents of colour and classic wooden furtniture have been used through the interiors to bring a warmth to the contrasting hues of the home.

Now retired, Colin and Jude love to entertain and have friends and family around, and they liked the spacious, welcoming feel that the kitchen/living area offered, with the interior opening up to outdoor dining under a portico.

Looking to enhance the design to meet their needs and take advantage of the site’s offerings, they worked closely with Scott Vile from Landmark Homes Taranaki to make modifications to the floor plan.

This included altering the entranceway to enable the golf course views to be showcased as soon as you walk through the door and switching the bedrooms from the southern side to the northern, to make the most of the daylight.

However, one of the biggest changes was to the outdoor area, adding a conservatory space to accommodate the elements without compromising on lifestyle.

Colin says, “We wanted to create a sheltered outdoor area to the golf course, because there is a prevailing westerly wind.

“Scott and his team came up with a concept whereby they extended the northwestern corner of the house and glassed it in such a way that this structure looks like an integral part of the home, as if it was all part of the plan. It’s our ‘outdoor’ room. There’s a nice flow.

“The team were so accommodating and helpful. It was a smooth process to get such a big change done, and they took our vision and made it a reality.”

Showhome style

The Morrison’s home was Landmark Homes Taranaki’s first Landmark in New Plymouth and in the first year, while Scott was establishing his showhome, they welcomed other home builders to pop in and have a look.

“It created a lot of interest,” says Colin. “There were lots of drive-bys and even now people come in off the street saying, ‘We love your house, can we come in and look around?’”

The home also caught the eye of the judges for the Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards, winning the New Home $500,000 – $650,000 category and gold overall in the regional round.

“We’re so proud of our home; it is exactly what we wanted.”
