North Shore Landmark Client Brian Fehsenfeld

Brian Fehsenfeld loves everything about his new Landmark home – even if the morning sun mucks up his sleep-ins.

“I told Jarrod I wanted to be able to see the sun rise in the morning. Now my only complaint is that I actually have to put on sunglasses because there’s so much light!”

Brian and his partner Raewyn took over their stunning four-bedroom home in Snell’s Beach in June 2019. Although the journey had been a long one, they are both thrilled with the result.

It was back in 2017 that the couple decided to demolish their old Kiwi bach and build a new home, but weren’t sure which company to go with. When they first encountered Landmark Homes at the Home Show, they were immediately impressed by Jarrod’s wealth of knowledge and building background.

“He told a good story without being pushy. He explained about all the components and how they take care of everything,” Brian says.

Although they’d looked at a few other building companies, it was Landmark Homes who ticked all the right boxes.

Being able to speak with four other Landmark clients clinched the deal. “We visited their homes and asked lots of questions, and they all gave good references. The main thing was that they all said they’d use them again. It gave us a lot of confidence in Landmark.”

They then met with Wendy King, Landmark North Shore’s inhouse Senior Designer, to draw up the plans and were again impressed with expertise – especially her ability to design the home working entirely from topographical drawings.

The Remove and Rebuild process began in June last year when they demolished the old bach. Then it was all systems go.

Although the building process took a little longer than originally expected due to the sloping site, soft ground and piling, the Fehsenfelds were able to leave everything in Landmark’s hands.

Not having to deal with red tape meant they were able to focus on the fun side of the build, like choosing interior design and appliances. Wendy Davies from Landmark took care of the paperwork and consent processes without a hitch.

“The consent process was completely stress-free. We have friends who have built homes and managed it themselves, so we know consents can be a nightmare. It would have taken us much longer doing it ourselves, but with Landmark taking care of everything it was effortless.”

Brian says they had a very specific idea of what they wanted: a house that looked like a beach house, built to take maximum advantage of the expansive views over Kawau Bay to the top of the Coromandel and Great Barrier Island. Despite the engineering challenges, Landmark were able to deliver exactly that.

The two-level home features a large living area and master bedroom upstairs, with a huge kitchen, butler’s pantry and dining area. The cavity slider allows them to shut off the kitchen while they’re entertaining, and the distinctive 2.7m high ceilings create a feeling of extra space.

There’s a fantastic deck out the front and another on the side of the master bedroom, which means the home can be opened up all the way through.

Downstairs is the perfect space for family, friends and visitors: a self-contained area with 3 bedrooms, bathroom, lounge and kitchenette. It also has a large deck for relaxing, entertaining, or just enjoying the views.

The best part, Brian says, is the view. “We have massive sliding doors, so you can open them up and look straight out from Snell’s Beach over Kawau Bay to Kawau Island. It’s just spectacular.”

With the water only 100m away, everyone who enters the house gets closer to the water as they walk down the hallway. Unusually, the view from downstairs is just as good as from upstairs.

Brian and Raewyn currently have their city home on the market. When it sells, they will move straight to their beach haven. “That’s my happy place up there now. We built it as a home for us and for our family and friends to enjoy.”

He says the Landmark Homes team has been an integral part of the build – especially Jarrod, who has been there since day one.

“We’ve built a magnificent home that we absolutely love. People ask what we would change, and we say nothing.”

“Would I use them again? Yes, I would. They’ve been a great team to deal with.”
