Home design is in the details

Aug 15, 2018

In the 1980s, it was walk-in wardrobes. Then it was ensuites, sculleries and now it’s outdoor living. When it comes to building your dream home, it’s more than erecting four walls – it’s about the details, big and small.

Be it structural design features that accentuate your world-class views, interior additions which give your living areas life, or unique appliances that make wining and dining a breeze, it’s these details which put character into your creation.

Where to start?

At its simplest, home design is dictated by three main factors: lifestyle, location and the budget.

Your lifestyle tells us what is important to you, and from here we can establish an initial design brief and evolve this over time to meet how you like to live.

Then there is location. Whether you’re positioned by a lake or your lot backs on to 30-acres of native bush, we look at where you want to build and explore ways in which we can make the most of this through structural and material features.

Working with you, we make a list of the must-haves and want-to-haves, and together (with your budget), we will help you create something special.

The big three

Here are our top three design details to consider when turning a house into a home.

OUTDOOR LIVING.

While this is not too popular in some of our colder regions, outdoor living is still the number-one detail that people want to maximise as part of their home design.

As well as creating unique outdoor spaces, it’s can also be about seamlessly extending the interior into the exterior, for example with our Taupo showhome. The glass slider doors completely open up and disappear into the wall for an unencumbered view of the lake, while the joinery is flush mounted into the foundation so that a deck/patio can meet it without having to step over. Beautiful!

CHARACTER MATERIALS.

Where once everything needed to be painted, we are moving towards an appreciation for timbers. These days, timber is everywhere – from room dividers and exposed trusses, to Scandinavian-inspired furniture and even timber fins which can act as a light filter (as shown on this gorgeous home based on our Patiki plan).

As well as being aesthetically pleasing, timber can be used in wonderful ways to make a home feel warm, light and bright, plus there’s a wonderful sense of connecting with nature in your own home.

TECHNOLOGY.

We’ve come a long way in how we interreact with technology in our homes, so why not incorporate new technology directly into the home build?

Home hubs are increasingly popular, a centralised point where you can control lighting, air con, garage doors and even music all from one location in the home, as well as from apps on your mobile devices. It’s safe and secure, and an innovative way to enhance your living experience.
